Greatness Of NFL Not Showing in Prime Time

Anything can happen in the NFL this year. Heading into week 11 the possibilities are endless; with 7 of 8 division races too close to call. Even the mighty Denver Broncos (who have earned the number 1 seed in the AFC two years in a row) have the Chiefs and Chargers breathing down their neck. Arizona has the best record at 8-1 but could come back to earth without Carson Palmer. The competitive balance in the NFL could not be better.

This great competitive balance has not always translated to great prime time games this season. Thursday Night Football has seen 6 games be decided by 20 points or more. Sunday Night Football has 8 of these games. Here we have contradicting information. The NFL has a bunch of teams clumped together by record, which provides much drama as we head into the final stretch. However, in the prime time games, their has been little drama. In fact the nationally televised prime time showcases have been an embarrassment for the NFL.

The NFL has had many great games this year. Something that prime time viewers have not seen much. It should be noted that the concept of Thursday Night Football ruins the week of preparation and essentially asks for sloppy football. There is a built in excuse for Thursday Night Football but not for NBC’s crown jewel Sunday Night Football. I think when everybody gets to play in prime time, you’re going to get some stinkers.

The NFL is the league where anything can happen on any given week. The league that can see the Steelers win back to back games against the Colts and Ravens but then lose to the lowly Jets. It feels like every Sunday afternoon there is nothing but drama and heart pounding finishes. The races for playoff spots are so tight. It may not show in prime time but the NFL is the league where you never know what to expect. I would not have it any other way.

NFL Predictions Week 8

Chris Schisler

It is hard to believe that we are half way through the NFL season. Week 8 has a great slate of games. Here are my picks:

My Record this season is 66-36-1

Chargers @ Broncos
Pick: Broncos
Reason: This will be a great game. Both teams are better than they were last year, when they met in the playoffs. In a toss up game, I tend to go with the home team. I also tend to pick the home team on Thursday nights.

Lions @ Falcons
Pick: Lions
Reason: The Falcons weaknesses feed into the Lions strengths. The Lions should be be able to give Matt Ryan a beating. Matthew Stafford will win the battle of the Matt’s by shredding the Falcons secondary.

Bills @ Jets
Pick: Jets
Reason: Almost every game has been close for the Jets this season. They’re really not a bad team. They do not have a good quarterback and they have lost to really good quarterbacks. Kyle Orton is decent but is no Tom Brady. Give me the Jets to get off the snide.

Ravens @ Bengals
Pick: Ravens
Reason: This is a tale of two teams in different directions. The Ravens have found their way ever since stumbling against the Bengals, in week 1. The Ravens have a sweet recipe for sweet victories and nothing would be more satisfying than revenge. The Ravens pass rush and the Bengals inability to stop the run will be the difference in this game.

Seahawks @ Panthers
Pick: Seahawks
Reason: You know my favorite saying: this is a get right game for Seattle. The Seahawks offense will find its stride against an inconsistent Panthers team.

Bears @ Patriots
Pick: Patriots
Reason: Ever since being humiliated on Monday Night, Tom Brady has been on fire. Give me the Patriots to win in a shootout. The Patriots home field may advantage may lack the mystique it once had, but its awfully hard to win there.

Texans @ Titans
Pick: Texans
Reason: Being the Titans QB is becoming a CBS gameshow called “Next Victim”. Enter Zach Mettinberger, who will soon know JJ Watt all too well.

Dolphins @ Jaguars
Pick: Dolphins
Reason: The Dolphins are simply a better team. Jacksonville has fight in them, but not much talent.

Rams @ Chiefs
Pick: Rams
Reason: I think the Rams can stop the Kansas City run game and subsequently beat up Alex Smith.

Vikings @ Buccaneers
Pick: Vikings
Reason: The Vikings defensive front will dominate Tampa’s offensive line. Bridgewater may dazzle in this game as well.

Eagles @ Cardinals
Pick: Cardinals
Reason: The Cardinals defense should dominate this game. If the Eagles pull this one off it won’t be pretty.

Raiders @ Browns
Pick: Browns
Reason: Can the Browns make a team 0 dimensional? The defense should pulverize Oakland. This game is why NFL Sunday ticket was invented.

Colts @ Steelers
Pick: Colts
Reason: Andrew Luck against that secondary? Some fantasy owners are going to see Christmas come early.

Packers @ Saints
Pick: Packers
Reason: The Superdome is not scary if the defense is as soft as ยข25 toilet paper. Aaron Rodgers is gonna rock and roll in this one.

Redskins @ Cowboys
Pick: Cowboys
Reason: I sense a lot of DeMarco Murray rushing yards and Redskins turnovers in the near future.

AFC East Up For Grabs

Chris Schisler
Presented by Yogolaada

Since 2001 the Patriots have pretty much dominated their division. The Patriots have almost won by default most seasons. This year the AFC East is up for grabs. Who will take control of this division?

The Patriots are 2-2 after getting embarrassed on Monday Night Football, by the Chiefs. The Dolphins are 2-2 and nobody knows what to make of it. Every Dolphins game has had a 13 point or greater point differential; meaning the 2014 Dolphins either dominate or get dominated. The Bills started a strong 2-0 but have lost 2 in a row. Buffalo has now benched quarterback, EJ Manuel, for Kyle Orton. The Jets are 1-3 despite playing good football; each of their losses have ended with them trailing by 1 score.

Despite the Patriots struggles they are the only team that receives the benefit of the doubt. The problem is they really are not a great team. Other than Rob Gronkowski, Brady’s targets are pedestrian. The offensive line is struggling and the defense is just okay. Brady and Belichick have a chance to right the ship but it does not look pretty for New England.

The Bills probably have the most talent in the division, believe it or not. They have playmakers at the skill positions, they have a good running game. Their defense is strong, despite the loss of Kiko Alonso, to injury. The one thing they don’t has is good quarterback play. Kyle Orton is certainly capable of managing the game. He is a good decision maker but not a game changing playmaker. If Orton provides good play the Bills could win the division.

At the end of the day, I think it boils down to the Patriots and Bills. It would not shock me if the Jets or Dolphins won the AFC East, but I don’t see it happening. Conventional wisdom says the Patriots reign again; this season however has been far from conventional in the AFC East.

Top 10 Games Of Week (College & Pro)

Between Division 1 (FBS) College Football and the NFL there are 90 football games from Thursday to Sunday. This is a quick preview for the Top 10 games to watch; exclusively for #CommonSenseNation:

1.) Green Bay Packers vs Seattle Seahawks (NFL Kickoff Game)
Thursday 8:30 TV: NBC
The NFL kickoff game could be a preview of the NFC Championship game. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense go against Richard Sherman and the Legion of Boom. Its great offense vs great defense to start the season.

2.) No. 8 Michigan State vs No. 3 Oregon
Saturday 6:30 TV: Fox
This is by far the most important game of the week in college football. Both teams have National Championship aspirations. In the first year of the 4 team playoff, this early season game could not have bigger implications.

3.) Indianapolis Colts vs Denver Broncos
SNF 8:20 TV: NBC
This could be a real shootout between Peyton Manning and the man who replaced him in Indianapolis, Andrew Luck. The star power on both sides makes for a remarkable beginning of Sunday Night Football.

4.) Cincinnati Bengals vs Baltimore Ravens
Sunday 1:00 TV: CBS
I will be at this game, rooting on the Ravens. This is a great way to start the season as the two favorites in the AFC North do battle.

5.) Maryland vs USF
Saturday 3:30 TV: CBS Sports Network
The Terps look to go 2-0 against the teams they should beat. Last week Maryland was dominant but had issues in the passing game. It will be interesting to see if they can get these issues ironed out against a decent South Florida team.

6.) No. 15 USC vs No. 11 Stanford
Saturday 3:30 TV: ABC
This is a great Pac 12 matchup. The Trojans are trying to reclaim their place as a College Football power as they battle the always tough Stanford Cardinal.

7.) San Diego Chargers vs Arizona Cardinals
Monday Night Football 10:20 TV: ESPN
The second game of ESPN’s Monday night double header will be a great battle. The Chargers had a great offseason and figure to be a strong team. The Cardinals have a strong defense and are trying to send a statement as they open their season on National television.

8.) New England Patriots vs Miami Dolphins
Sunday 1:00 TV: CBS
The Patriots always get a tough game when they travel to play Miami. Start off your season with this AFC East rivalry.

9.) Virginia Tech vs No. 5 Ohio State
Saturday 8:00 TV: ESPN
Navy played the Buckeyes tight. You heard it here first, the Buckeyes are ripe for picking, on national TV. This is my upset special of the week, as I am picking Virginia Tech to beat Ohio State.

10.) Michigan vs Notre Dame
Saturday 730 TV: NBC
Emotions should run high as this is the last foreseeable game of this epic rivalry. Its stupid scheduling politics ending this rivalry so enjoy it on Saturday.

Top 10 Thursday Night Games (College & NFL)

Chris Schisler

There is now Thursday night football all season long in both the NFL and college football. Here are the top 10
Match ups for 2014 football fans.

1.) NFL Week 1 Packers @ Seahawks
Here we have a possible NFC championship game. Aaron Rodgers and the prolific Packer offense against Richard Sherman and the Seahawks defense. This could be the best game of the year.

2.) NFL Week 2 Steelers @ Ravens
The Ravens and Steelers clashing is always must see television. It may be the best rivalry in sports.

3.) College Week 5: UCLA @Arizona St.
With a 10pm start us east coasters will have to stay up late for this one. Brett Hundley vs a very strong Arizona State program makes it worth it.

4.) NFL Week 8: Chargers @ Broncos
The Chargers are the only team in the AFC West that can give Denver a run run for their money. This game could have crucial implications on the playoff race.

5.) College Week 1: Texas A&M @ South Carolina
Texas A&M battles a South Carolina team who some argue could win it all. This is our first glimpse at Texas A&M without Johnny Football.

6.) NFL Week 16: Chargers @ 49ers
This is two quality teams late in the season which means playoff spots could be on the line.

7.) College Week 14: LSU @ Texas A&M
There is nothing like a cold December night with two prominent SEC programs doing battle.

8.) College Week 4: Auburn @ Kansas State
Its a primetime quarterback matchup between Nick Marshall and Jake Waters. This could be a barnburner.

9.) NFL Week 7 Jets @ Patriots
I guess we could call this next installment of this rivalry the Revis Bowl. Derrelle Revis plays against the Jets, his former team.

10.) NFL Week 5 Vikings @ Packers
Aaron Rodgers and the Pack against Adrian Peterson and the Vikings. Could this be rookie QB, Teddy Bridgewater’s first meeting with the Packers?

Predictions: AFC East

New England Patriots: 11-5
Reason: The Patriots always seem to find a way to be on top the AFC East. I see no reason to bet against the Brady/Belichick duo now. This is especially because the defense projects to be better in 2014.

New York Jets: 10-6
Reason: The Jets had an incredible offseason. Erick Decker and Jace Amaro should significantly help the quarterback, whether it be Geno Smith or Mike Vick. The defense, especially the front 7 should be very good. The Jets went 8-8 last year with awful quarterback play. If they can get average play from under center they can have a 10 win season.

Buffalo Bills: 8-8
Reason: I think the Bills made real strides this offseason at least offensively. I am still not sure I buy into EJ Manuel stock and they have several defensive issues. Kiko Alonso is going to miss the season due to injury. That is a huge blow.

Miami Dolphins: 7-9
Reason: I think everyone in the East but the Dolphins got better this offseason. Miami talked a big game last year-the sexy pick to win the division. I think they still struggle on the offensive line and the defense is not dominant.

Rivalries That Still Matter In the NFL

Chris Schisler

If we are being honest, nobody does rivalries better than college football. For example “War Eagle” (Auburn) versus “Roll Tide” (Alabama) is given nearly life or death importance. The National Football League however has its fair share of rivalries as well. A good rivalry in professional sports is like a fire. To burn with a scorching flame it needs three things. A rivalry is sparked when teams routinely stand in each other’s way. A rivalry needs big moments that creates disdain for the opponent on both sides. Finally a rivalry needs to truly matter. A rivalry should be an all out bloodbath, a brutally excitement that elevates the moment. A truly current rivalry is must watch TV, even if you are not a fan of either team. I highly recommend that you have your chinstraps buckled and your mouth pieces in, as we look at the most important rivalries in professional football, today.

There are plenty of rivalries that don’t really matter. These rivalries lack the big moments that give it relevance. While the history is rich, these rivalries need to be reignited. For example, when Kansas City and Oakland have played in recent years there has not been a lot at stake. The Cowboys and Redskins are a rivalry and to their fans its important. Yet the Cowboys and Redskins have been such under achievers nobody else cares. One of the most historic rivalries is Cleveland vs. Pittsburgh. The problem is the one sided nature of the rivalry. Pittsburgh has had great success and Cleveland has sputtered. Cleveland hates Baltimore with a passion unknown to the rest of mankind. They have a reason; Baltimore took their team and won two Super Bowls. Yet this is not a rivalry, at least one that matters. When quarterback Joe Flacco, has only lost one game to Cleveland in 6 years, how is that a rivalry?

There is no rivalry which burns more furiously than the Ravens and the Steelers. Both sides hate each other. Sure you have the never ending six-rings-your-insignificant chant from Pittsburgh fans but this denial is of the weak variety (It should be easy to determine which side I am on). The Steelers hate us and we hate them, its that simple. With the hate there is an undying respect. We hate each other because we are constantly fighting for the same prize. We respect each other because we both fight valiantly and understand it could go either way. When Baltimore plays Pittsburgh, it is almost always a hard fought and highly contested game that comes down to the final play. The Ravens and Steelers play twice a year. There have been mega sized moments that went in both directions. The Steelers beating the Ravens in the 2008 AFC Championship; Flacco reclaiming the upper hand for Baltimore with a 92 yard touchdown, drive that completed the 2011 series sweep as examples. Being the most hyped match ups of the year qualifies this as a truly important rivalry.

The Baltimore Ravens are one of those few teams that have multiple mega sized rivalries. The Ravens and Patriots are a rivalry. With 3 playoff meetings (2 of them being in back to back AFC Championships) a natural rivalry ensued. The Patriots and Ravens find more and more ways to dislike each other. In Baltimore, quarterback Tom Brady is crowned the queen of the sissies. In New England, Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs have assumed the role of public enemy number 1. Personally, I have never felt the animosity towards New England as a Ravens fan. I have an ultimate respect for the Patriots and admire Brady’s competitive nature. Baltimore continuously outplays them in the post season. The 2011 AFC Championship was lost by Ravens miscues; I save my resentment towards Lee Evans and Billy Cundiff. There is no denying the rivalry however. It has all three components in an angry surplus.

The entire AFC East loathes the New England Patriots. The Patriots just keep plugging away, racking up division titles. The Dolphins did manage to sneak a division title in 2008. The Jets however have been the Patriots most relevant rival. This is due to the complete opposite styles of the two head coaches, Rex Ryan and Bill Belichick. The boastful Rex Ryan and his team which loudly takes shots at the Patriots is what stirs the pot. This is one of the most emotional rivalries in all of sports even if it is largely one sided. Both teams get under each others skin and it is must see TV.

Speaking of must see TV, that is exactly what the 49ers vs. Seahawks is. I classify this as the second most meaningful rivalry in the NFL. If I did not have such a Maryland centric point of reference maybe I would favor this NFC West showdown. What makes this rivalry so compelling (besides Richard Sherman and Michael Crabtree) is the similarities between these teams. They are both physical, tough grind it out kind of football teams. This was on display in the NFC Championship game this past year. It was a classic gladiator like fight in which the Seahawks came away victorious. With the Seahawks as reigning Super Bowl champions it must be a tough time to be a 49ers fan.

We cannot get through a meaningful conversation about rivalries and skip the NFC North. Much like the AFC East every team loathes the Patriots; in the NFC North despises the Packers. Green Bay and Chicago have one of the longest rivalries. The rivalry stays current because of big meetings like the 2010 NFC Championship despite Green Bay continuously beating Chicago.

The Vikings and Packers is a little one sided as well but it remains relevant in the big picture. This is mostly due to Packer legend Brett Favre and his run with the Vikings. Gary Breeze, a Vikings fan I know from work told me how he felt about this. “I couldn’t really handle Brett Favre as a Viking,” Breeze told me about rooting for his longtime enemy. Gary told me that there is a real smugness he gets from Packers fans, as if because they have a great history they are superior. This rivalry could never cool down because of the close proximity between Green Bay and Minneapolis.

The last rivalry I’d like to highlight is the one between the Denver Broncos and the San Diego Chargers. Like most rivalries these two teams are division foes with a long history. Throughout the years it has been a back and forth. I looked up the all time record on Pro-football-reference.com (a great source for statistics). The Broncos lead the Chargers in the all time series 59-48 which is fairly competitive. The rivalry was especially present this past season. Mike McCoy, formerly the Broncos OC was the first year head coach with the Chargers. Once Denver and San Diego revealed the weaknesses of the Chiefs, the Chargers were the only legit threat to the Broncos. Denver out dueled the Chargers at home in the playoffs. The rivalry seemed to be renewed and refreshed. There is just something about Rivers vs Manning and their personalities that spark such a rivalry building contrast.

Rivalries enhance the moment. There is something about that tension in the air, the weight of the games and the thrill that comes with a win and utter despair that leaves you beyond repair. Rivalries are enhanced by rich history but are constantly renewed through pivotal shifts of power. Many great rivalries have faded or burn hot but are irrelevant to the common NFL fan. A true rivalry is about pride and passion for your team and the loathing and active animosity towards anyone who stands in your team’s way.

Why Do Teams Struggle After Winning The Super Bowl

Chris Schisler

The Seattle Seahawks have some daunting odds to repeat according to recent history. The past 5 Super Bowl champions failed to win a playoff game the in the following season. The National Football League has not seen a repeat since the Patriots won Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX. Winning a championship in the NFL is hard, winning back to back Super Bowls is almost impossible. Why do Super Bowl champions seem to struggle so much a year later? Here are 3 possible reasons for this phenomenon:

1.) Can’t Keep The Band Together

Winning the big game comes with big pay days. Chances are a Super Bowl winning team will lose a few key pieces. Look at the Ravens. As free agency began after their second Super Bowl victory they lost players seemingly by the second. Ozzie Newsome made it quite clear the Ravens were in it for the long haul. The intent was to not mortgage a bright future for one more crack at glory. Much of the Super Bowl victory is to do with a team finding a perfect chemistry. When you lose key players like Baltimore did to retirement and free agency, its hard to find that magic again.

2.) The Best Team Is Not Always The Super Bowl Winner

In both of the Giants Super Bowl wins against the Patriots, New York was probably the lesser team. Both Super Bowl XLII and XLVI were a result of a magical run after just making the playoffs. They matched up well against the Patriots and stepped up to the moment. In 2007 the Patriots entered the Super Bowl undefeated; their offensive firepower was historic. The point of this story is the best team does not always win the Super Bowl. Sometimes magical Super Bowl runs happen when a team overachieves. If a team over achieved to win it all the following year they are more likely to regress from the Super Bowl caliber standard they have set.

3.) Momentum Can Work Against You

The Green Bay Packers won Super Bowl XLV in convincing fashion against the Pittsburgh Steelers. They looked poised to repeat as they went 15-1 in the regular season following their championship. The Packers seemed nearly immortal, Aaron Rodgers was unstoppable. This is what many believed and it’s hard to think the Pack didn’t believe it as well. They had been challenged very few times in the 2011 regular season. The Giants however whooped them in the 2011 divisional playoff game. Winning covers up faults a team has. Eventually faults will be exposed.

Knocks Of Common Sense

A knock of Common Sense is awarded to the people who need it the most. The dumbest of the dumb. The crappiest of the crappiest. I admit I got the idea from 105.7 The Fan’s shovel of wisdom segment. The summer heat is making me want to lose it. So here we go:

1.) The People Freaking Out About A Stolen Playbook

The team that brought you spy gate now has brought you playbook-gate (You know the idiots are going to call it this). Browns head coach Mike Petine (previously with the Jets) has suggested that Bill Belichick has gotten his hands on the Jets defensive playbook. Here is why this sounds worse than it is. The Patriots play the Jets twice a year. Rex Ryan has been with the Jets since 2009. While “stealing” is wrong you could probably give Belichick a blank playbook and he could fill it with the Jets defensive plays, calls etc.
If the Patriots are proven of the alleged foul play, they will be punished accordingly. Lets not act like it really changes things that much. The reports say that the Patriots coach got it from his friend Nick Saban (Alabama head coach). If its that easy to get, its not stealing… is it?

2.) Dan Marino: 3 Steps Back

Dan Marino is removing himself from a lawsuit against the NFL for illegal administration of pain killers and poor medical care. The lawsuit is bogus, asinine and you would think I’d be applauding Dan Marino. The fact of the matter is he should have never put his name on it in the first place. Its an inconvenience to his TV career. It made him look bad to associate with a bunch of money grabbers but it makes him look worse to back away from it. If no one knew about it or pressured Marino he would never had taken his name of the lawsuit. It shows that he did not believe in the cause, it was a calculated business decision. When it became inconvenient he tried to erase his action. Maybe I am being unfair but I really am turned off by this.

3.) People Not Outraged By Jim Irsay
Owners guide to screw ups:
When you say the wrong thing an NBA team can be taken from you, everyone hates you and you are the never ending joke on Twitter. When you are intoxicated, driving under the influence and are in possession of drugs, people pretend to care for a while and then let it go.

I am sorry but we need to be outraged by Jim Irsay. A man who breaks laws (that put others in potential harm) is barely scraped in the public eye. If Irsay was a player everyone would be hollering left and right. Roger Goodell would actually have a back bone and the media would never stop talking about it.

The Endless Debate: Who’s Better Manning or Brady

-Chris Schisler
There is possibly no debate more fun than picking between Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. In many respects it is a pointless argument. Choosing one does not discredit the other; both are top 5 quarterbacks of all time. People are also very decided on this issue. You’re either a Brady guy or a Manning guy, and that’s how you will always see it. This debate is however amongst the most entertaining conversations in football.

Peyton Manning was born to play quarterback. He is the son of beloved Saints quarterback Archie Manning & it did not take Peyton long to steal the spotlight. The Manning name is royalty in the game of football.Manning went to Tennessee to play his college football for the Volunteers. It was clear from the beginning that Manning was a special talent. In 1998 the Indianapolis Colts drafted him number 1 overall. Manning was supposed to be great and he managed to be even greater than expected.

Tom Brady was a 6th round draft pick. At Michigan he was part of a two quarterback system. No one knew he would be an all-time great. Anyone who says they did is a liar. But when Drew Bledsoe went down with an injury in the 2001 season, the Patriots had no choice but start Tom Brady. Behind a great New England team he won his first Super Bowl that season.

At this point, America was in love with Tom Brady. He was the tough underdog that everyone could root for. Out of practically nowhere he became one of the league’s biggest superstars.Brady would continue to have a tremendous amount of success. He won another 2 Super Bowls and his first 10 playoff games. Brady has made the Patriots a contender every season (except for 2008 when he was injured). On top of it all he married supermodel, Gisele Bundchen. The same person who was thought of as a tough hard working diamond in the rough now fights a troubling public image. Many people can’t relate to Brady and most of these people cone off as jealous.

There is a perception that Brady is a whiner and he is often called a pretty-boy diva. Some of Brady’s critics have a point but what man would not trade lives with Tom Brady for a day?

If you make it a popularity contest, Manning would likely win. Manning comes off as a cerebral student of the game. He comes off as funny and human. In short people can relate to Manning in a way they can’t with Brady. In actuality both quarterbacks are very cerebral and are great students of the game. Both quarterbacks are revered by their teammates and are hard workers. Manning and Brady are both extremely competitive.

These players are two of the last “Old School” pocket passers in the game of football. Mechanically however they are very different. Manning is more athletic. He will never look to run but he can roll out and keep plays alive with extraordinary footwork. He used to kill with the play-action pass game built off the stretch run play. Brady is more of a stationary passer.

Blitzing either quarterback is often a mistake. They both have one of the quickest releases I have ever seen. As masters of their craft Brady and Manning beat you before the snap of the football.Tom Brady has the better arm strength. I think there is nobody that steps into their throws quite like Tom Brady.

In a perfect world we would appreciate them as equals. Just about every strength that Manning has Brady has too. How do we break down who is better? Results have got to go into the equation.

Tom Brady has 3 Super Bowl rings and has played in 5 Super Bowls. His playoff record is 18-7. No quarterback has won more games in the postseason. The translation of these numbers is that Brady has given the Patriots a chance to win the Super Bowl almost every season. Peyton Manning has been in 2 Super Bowls and has only won 1 of them. His playoff record is 10-11. Manning has struggled in many seasons to get out of the divisional round. Throughout his career he has been miraculous in the regular season and his teams often enter the divisional round off a bye while having home-field advantage. The results show Tom Brady as the better playoff quarterback.

Football is a team sport and it takes a team to win. There is no position that has a greater impact on the game then that of quarterback. Great quarterbacks give their team a better chance to win the game. Playoff results are as valid as any measure when comparing all time great quarterbacks.

A common argument is that Tom Brady has had better teams, and that is why he has more Super Bowls. While it is true he had better defenses on his side; one could argue he has had less talent around him offensively. Think about it. Peyton had Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, and Dallas Clark in Indianapolis. Brady had Troy Brown and Deion Branch and David Patten.

When Brady finally had a true dominant receiver in Randy Moss, he broke the single season touchdown record. Manning broke that record with the league’s most talented receiving core. Demaryous Thomas, Wes Welker and Erik Decker all are great in their roles. Julius Thomas is a matchup nightmare at tight end.

Brady has had championship defense but usually did not have as much talent to work with offensively. Plus it’s been a few years since the Bellicheck defense lived up to its reputation. Has Brady always had better teams? Either way he has won more than Manning.

The debate could go on forever and believe me it will. In the interest of full disclosure I will tell you that I’m a Brady guy. I always have been a Brady guy and always will be. No matter who you choose, these are two of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
